Final fantasy 7 [Jun. 5th, 2004|08:17 am]
General Story:

Final Fantasy VII deals with a plot surrounding the huge corporation called ShinRa, who has built mako reactors throughout the planet. These reactors feed off the planet's energy in order to provide electricity for the masses. ShinRa has two major fighting units at its disposal: The Turks, president ShinRa's personal guard, and SOLDIER, a group of extremely tough and precisely skilled fighters. Mako is not only processed for power, but is also used as a type of treatment for those who graduate from the general army to SOLDIER. These doses of energy make the individual stronger, but also gives them the peculiar characteristic of distinctive eyes.

The game itself begins with Cloud Strife, a supposed member of SOLDIER, joining with the group AVALANCHE in order to oppose ShinRa.

The story then unfolds to show the greater evil: JENOVA, an alien being that was sequestered by ShinRa laboratories for testing about 35 years ago present game-time. This alien was believed to be a part of the ancient race called "Cetra". Because the ancients had the knowledge of the planet at their disposal, and spoke of a Promised Land in which everything was plentiful, ShinRa wished to used JENOVA's cells to create Cetra in order to find the passage to the Promised Land.

Dr. Ghast, Professor Hojo, and Lucretia were the scientists who headed this research, creating from Lucretia's child, Sephiroth, the first genetically engineered ancient. Although they believed the experiment to be a success, they were mistaken. JENOVA is indeed the body of an ancient, but little of its Cetra roots are left. JENOVA is in reality an alien virus from space, which attacked the Cetra centuries ago when a great meteor hit the North Pole, creating the Northern Crater. JENOVA began to posses the ancient race, making them transform into gruesome monsters and lose their minds.

Humans were spared from this fate and evolved from the Cetra. Because they despised the grueling nomadic life of the Cetra, parts of the ancient tribe settled and began to live a sedentary lifestyle; these are the human's ancestors.

Character Statistics and Stories:

Cloud Strife

Job: Mercenary (ex-member of SOLDIER )
Age: 21
Weapon: Sword
Height: 5'7"
Blood Type: AB
Birth Date: August 19
Birthplace: Nibelheim
Cloud's past love interest was Tifa. However, she tended to ignore him in her younger years, particularly after her mother died. This incident started a conflict between Cloud and Tifa's father, because Tifa was badly injured when she ran into the mountains, consumed with grief for her mother. Cloud followed, and was blamed for not being able to protect her.

This was probably the final straw in Cloud's decision to join the army in hopes of making SOLDIER. He also idolized Sephiroth, whom he wanted to meet.

Cloud never did make SOLDIER, but he did become good friends with a member named Zack. With his friend, Cloud has his first mission with Sephiroth. This occurs when the reactor at Nibelheim must be checked. By truck, Cloud, Zack, Sephiroth and two other soldiers (one driving) make their way to the village. Sephiroth and Zack know it's Cloud's hometown, but Cloud doesn't particularly want to return since he hasn't made SOLDIER yet, and feels he will be a disappointment to his mother and to Tifa and her father. This is why Cloud is so ardent about keeping his helmet on during his time in Nibelheim, and the voyage to the reactor. Sephiroth also returns to his "hometown" in this voyage, and senses there is something familiar about the place. However, he doesn't divulge more information.

After spending some time at his mother's house catching up with her, and admitting he hasn't made SOLDIER, Cloud is consoled by her, and sets out with the rest of the team. Tifa, now being trained in the martial arts, ends up being their guide to navigate the Nibelheim mountains. Cloud still hides behind his helmet, not wanting her to know he's returned.

Once everything is checked, the group returns to the town. However, Sephiroth secludes himself in the Nibelheim mansion's library, reading Professor Hojo's notes about how he was created and was supposedly the first man-made ancient. Probably influenced a lot by JENOVA dwelling in his mind, Sephiroth snaps and begins wreaking havoc on the town: He burns it down, and runs toward the reactor in the mountains. In this fire, Cloud's mother is killed.

Enraged, Cloud chases after Sephiroth. Both Tifa and Zack have also followed the general. On his way into the reactor, Sephiroth stabs Tifa's father, leaving his sword embedded in his corpse. Tifa enters at that moment, pulls the sword from her father, and runs at Sephiroth. He grabs her and slashes her across the chest, entering a secluded part of the reactor where JENOVA is held, and cuts off her head. Zack then enters and lays Tifa aside, promptly chasing Sephiroth into the back room. Soon after, Cloud arrives, and leans over Tifa, taking care of her. This is when Zack flies out the back room, onto a reactor module and, badly injured, tells Cloud he must stop Sephiroth. Aghast that his childhood hero would do such dishonorable things, Cloud races up the stairs and confronts Sephiroth. For the first time, Cloud throws off his helmet and openly chastises the general. Annoyed, Sephiroth stabs Cloud through the chest, but is surprised when Cloud retaliates by grabbing the blade and lifting Sephiroth off the ground, throwing him into the mako below. Cloud then collapses.

For five years, he and Zack are held in ShinRa laboratories, where scientists attempt to make them clones of Sephiroth through JENOVA and mako treatments. Cloud has an adverse reaction to the mako, and his mind becomes confused. He is unable to function on his own when Zack breaks out, traveling through the nearby forest in attempts at escape. All the way, he carries Cloud with him. However, before he can escape from the dangerous grounds around the facility, a group of soldiers attack Zack, who is shot and killed. Cloud then assumes partially his identity.

The game-play starts soon after this incident.

Aerith Gainsborough

Job: Flower Merchant
Age: 22
Weapon: Rod
Height: 5'3"
Blood Type: O
Birthplace: February 7
Birthplace: Icicle Village
Aeirth's real mother, Ilfana, was a Cetra, like she is. Realistically, Aerith is the only complete ancient alive in the game. However, her surrogate mother, Elmyra, is a human. She raised Aerith since she was young because Ilfana died.

In game-time, Aerith asks Cloud to be her bodyguard near the beginning of the game and is with him throughout the plot. She shows interest in him, but it’s debatable if she actually loves Cloud, or the nuances he retains from Zack’s personality. In the past, Zack and Aerith dated, though the extent of their relationship is never mentioned. Aerith leaves only periodically until she is killed by a Sephiroth clone, who stabs her when she tries to pray for the planet.

Aerith’s death releases Holy, a materia like the black materia, which conflicts with meteor and begins to save the planet. However, it is unsuccessful, and life stream stops the destruction of the planet. It is arguable that it is still Aerith who saved the planet by guiding life stream, using her ancient powers, to the destruction.

Tifa Lockheart

Job: Bar Hostess (AVALANCHE member)
Age: 20
Weapon: Gloves
Height: 5'4"
Blood Type: B
Birth Date: May 3
Birthplace: Nibelheim

All of Tifa’s known past is described in Cloud’s. In present game-time, Tifa runs a bar in Midgar called the “Seventh Heaven”. She uses this facility as a front for the AVALANCHE rebellion group, who opposes ShinRa’s immoral actions. She acts as a maternal figure toward Marelene. When you first meet Tifa, she must be rescued from being used by Don Corneo, whose business she wished to infiltrate to gain information about ShinRa. There Tifa meets with Cloud once again, as well as Aerith. At first Aerith and Tifa are rivals, but they soon become friends.

Barrett Wallace

Job: Leader of AVALANCHE
Age: 35
Weapon: Gun-Arm
Height: 6'4"
Blood Type: O
Birth Date: December 15
Birthplace: Coral village
Before joining AVALANCHE, Barrett was part of a coal mining community in the Corel mountain-range. He hears of the new-aged “mako power” that will be soon available, and starts convincing the people in his village that it’s the right path to choose. Despite his friend Dyne’s opposition, Barrett finally gets the common vote for building a reactor. However, while Dyne and he were away on a hike in the mountains, the reactor explodes, and in order to avoid a court case, ShinRa troops set the town ablaze, blaming the disaster on a non-existent rebel group.

When ShinRa troops begin chasing citizens from Corel, Barrett and Dyne are cornered near a cliff, and Dyne slips. Barrett catches him before he falls off, but a soldier shoots at both of them, severing their joining arms. Barrett is forced to let Dyne fall.

Feeling guilty and responsible for Dyne’s death because his decision for allowing a mako reactor to be built brought ShinRa to the town, he takes Marlene, Dyne’s daughter, and leaves for Midgar. There he meets with Tifa and the other members of AVALANCHE: Wedge, Biggs, and Jesse. Because of his immense hatred toward ShinRa, he becomes their leader until Cloud joins the group.

Nanaki (Red XIII)

Job: Beast
Age: 45
Weapon: Head Dress
Height: 3'9"
Blood Type: Unknown
Birth Date: Unknown
Birthplace: Cosmo Canyon

Cait Sith

Job: Toysarus
Age: Unknown
Weapon: Megaphone
Height: 3'2"
Blood Type: Unknown
Birth Date: Unknown
Birthplace: Unknown
Cait Sith is actually Reeve, the Turk, who pilots him first to spy on the party and sequester the key to the Ancient City. Later, Reeve sacrifices Cait in order to save the party, and, in his second form, joins the party on the side of good.

When Reeve is caught by ShinRa on the side of good, he retreats to the Midgar slums. Later, when Meteor begins to destroy that sector, he helps evacuate its citizens.

Vincent Valentine

Job: Unemployed
Age: 27
Weapon: Gun
Height: 6'0"
Blood Type: A
Birth Date: October 13
Birthplace: Unknown (Suspected Wutai)
Vincent was a member of the Turks thirty years ago. He was assigned at some point in his career to guard the scientists at ShinRa laboratories. During this assignment he met Lucretia, and her supervisor, Hojo. Vincent fell in love with Lucretia, but it's never said if she returned the sentiment. Whether or not she did, when Vincent proposes to her, she refuses. Soon after she is seen kissing Hojo in Nibelheim square. Vincent is devastated, but, being a noble character, says her happiness is enough for him. This changes when he hears that Hojo is planning to experiment with Lucretia's unborn child. Enraged, Vincent faces Hojo, who promptly shoots the Turk (in the scene, it's not clear where Vincent is shot, but the theory is Hojo shot his left arm at such proximity, it had to be amputated with his claw), and Vincent falls unconscious.

Although the process isn't detailed, Hojo experiments on Vincent, resulting in him having a metal claw, and the ability to turn into a demon when he's hurt or threatened. It's assumed he also has eternal life because after Hojo finished his procedures, Vincent is locked in the Nibelheim mansion basement for thirty years, over which he doesn't age at all. However, his hair does grow to about mid-back, so his metabolism may have simply been slowed while in stasis. Any theories are unconfirmed.

Vincent joins the team when he discovers Lucretia's child, Sephiroth is terrorizing the planet, and threatening to destroy it with a giant meteor. During the game, he confronts Lucretia, who asks if the rumor Sephiroth died several years ago (when Cloud throws him into the mako) is true. Although Sephiroth is alive in the North crater, and his clones have been leading Cloud's team around, Vincent lies and says that he is dead, protecting Lucretia from the horrible truth.

Yuffie Kisragi

Job: Materia Hunter, Ninja
Age: 16
Weapon: Knife, Boomerang Origami (for throwing)
Height: 5'2"
Blood Type: A
Birth Date: November 20
Birthplace: Wutai

Cid Highwind

Job: Pilot
Age: 32
Weapon: Spear
Height: 5'8"
Blood Type: B
Birth Date: February 22
Birthplace: Unknown

Cid resides in Rocket-Town, a location marked by a giant rocket protruding from the horizon, hence the name. Cid's dream was to fly into outer space, but once he had completed the rocket of his dreams, Shira, his assistant, told him that one of oxygen tank #8 is faulty. Because she's in the room during the launch, and would be burned to death if the rocket did take off, Cid chooses to abort. Cid was absolutely deflated after this, so Shira believes she owes her life to him because she ruined his dream. Cid isn't particularly nice to her, but she persists: either for love, or for the debt she has to him.

Sephiroth

Job: Top ranking SOLDIER officer
Age: Unknown (Suspected 35)
Weapon: Masamune
Height: 6'2"
Birth Date: Unknown
Birthplace: Unknown (Suspected Nibelheim)
Sephiroth believes his mother is JENOVA, not Lucretia. After JENOVA goes to work on his mind after the Nibelheim incident, Sephiroth begins to seek vengeance on humanity. He believes they are not worthy because they abandoned the nomadic Cetra lifestyle. Sephiroth also feels he is an ancient, and thusly, can ascend to the promised land and attain godliness.

In order to destroy the planet, Sephiroth periodically controls Cloud to progress his plans. To get the Black Materia, that summons the meteor, he uses the JENOVA cells linking himself and Cloud to obtain the orb.

The true Sephiroth is encased in crystallized mako in the Northern Crater. The Sephiroth Cloud chases throughout the game is only one of many clones created by Hojo. Sephiroth's true body was partially destroyed after the Nibelheim incident, where he was washed into life stream and to the greatest concentration of mako: The North. Because the first meteor hit there, and the planet is still utilizing a lot of mako to heal the crater created by the impact, Sephiroth was drawn there.

At the end of the game, Sephiroth merges with JENOVA, then becomes a demi-god as Safer Sephiroth. Truly, Sephiroth was never really evil, he was simply heavily influenced by the JENOVA born within him.
